Nicosia, Cyprus. Police have advised drivers to stay away from Digenis Akritas Avenue, a major Nicosia road, on Thursday afternoon ahead of a march by trade union PEO. The union plans to leave its offices at 5pm and proceed to the labour ministry.

Traffic arrangements

Police said officers would be deployed along the route to manage security, implement traffic measures and help vehicles move through the area.

They asked motorists to avoid affected roads wherever possible, remain patient and follow officers’ directions.

Workplace safety concerns

PEO said the demonstration would focus on workplace health and safety. It was organised following an incident earlier this month in which three construction workers fell nine metres at a construction site in Strovolos, a suburb of Nicosia.

That incident followed the death last month of a 52-year-old man at a construction site in Peyia, a village in Paphos district. The incidents have prompted unions to question safety standards and protective measures at construction sites nationwide.
