Nicosia, Cyprus. Two restoration projects are under way on Nicosia’s medieval walls, with conservation work at Podocataro Bastion expected to be completed by November 2026, the Department of Antiquities said on Monday.

The projects cover the curtain wall between the Caraffa and Podocataro Bastions and the Podocataro Bastion itself.

Conservation works

The curtain wall project is being undertaken by specialised Department of Antiquities staff under the supervision of its scientific personnel.

The department described the work as an ongoing project, which will continue with the conservation of the walls’ perimeter in areas under the effective control of the Republic.

Podocataro Bastion

Work on the Podocataro Bastion is being carried out by a private contractor on behalf of the department and under its supervision.

Both projects are funded through the Department of Antiquities’ budget.

Historic fortifications

The department said the works form part of its continuing conservation programme for the historic fortifications, which are among the defining features of the capital’s old city.

The Venetian walls encircle Nicosia’s historic centre and include a series of 16th-century bastions and gates.
