Latchi: the harbour and a peaceful day by the sea

Latchi is a good choice for a stroll around the harbour, lunch by the water and exploring the coastal part of the Polis area. A boat trip can round off the day, but isn’t essential for an enjoyable visit. First, decide on your main interest, then check the specific jetty, service or stretch of coastline.

The name appears in various forms, including Latchi and Latsi. When booking, make sure you check the exact address and map so as not to confuse the town centre of Polis with the departure point at the harbour. A general reference to the region does not explain where the operator meets guests or how to get there.

For a short trip, it’s best to focus on a walk and lunch as your main activities. If you’re including a trip out to sea, build the rest of your itinerary around the confirmed conditions. A promotional photograph of the bay or the boat does not guarantee the route, the weather, swimming or the return time on your chosen date.

How to enjoy a stroll by the harbour

Please park your car in a designated area and walk along the open public areas by the water. This working harbour combines leisure and work: there may be restrictions on access to jetties, service areas and passenger boarding points. Do not board a vessel or enter a restricted area to take photographs without permission from the person in charge.

Whilst out walking, it’s interesting to look at the boats, the layout of the shoreline and how the various establishments are connected to the harbour. Choose a safe, public spot to stop, taking care not to obstruct the passageway or the crews’ work. It is particularly important for children to distinguish between the promenade and the edge of the jetty; do not leave them near the water without supervision.

When choosing a café, check the menu and the kitchen’s opening hours. A view of the harbour does not determine the ingredients, price or origin of the fish: you’ll need to ask the café for this information. If you’d like to have lunch after a boat trip, don’t book it too close to the advertised return time; allow for any changes to the boat’s timetable.

Beach scenario

A stroll around the harbour and a day at the beach are different ways to spend your visit. If you’re planning to go for a swim, choose a specific, accessible stretch of shore, and check the signage and current conditions. The mere proximity of the sea does not mean that the harbour’s working waters are suitable for swimming, nor does it imply that conditions are the same along the entire coastline.

Check the beach surface, the entry into the water and whether there’s enough space for your group to get comfortable. Lifeguard services, sun loungers and other facilities may vary depending on the location and season; check these separately. If it is windy or the sea is rough, you could opt for a walk along the shore and lunch instead of swimming, whilst still enjoying the trip without taking any unnecessary risks.

If you’re booking accommodation for the beach, find out the actual walking distance, any steps involved and where you’re allowed to cross. The distance as the crow flies doesn’t always mean an easy walk. For families, it’s worth checking the car park, shade and room facilities; the promise of being ‘near the sea’ doesn’t cover all the details that can affect your day.

What you need to know about a boat trip

Before making payment, ask for the exact meeting point, the name of the operator and the vessel, the itinerary and the estimated duration. Check whether this is a group trip, a private charter with a crew, or a self-drive charter. These are different services with different responsibilities and terms and conditions.

Ask for confirmation of the permitted operating format, passenger restrictions, safety equipment, safety briefings and contact details. If the requirements are unclear, do not accept the promotional claim ‘safe’ as a sufficient answer. If you intend to operate the vessel yourself, make sure you clarify the necessary documentation, experience required, the area of operation and the conditions for returning the vessel.

Please inform the operator of the participants’ ages and any circumstances that may affect boarding or participation. Please enquire about access on board, steps and assistance if a person has difficulty moving around. The description ‘suitable for the whole family’ does not guarantee that the service will be equally suitable for every child or visitor with reduced mobility.

Route, stops and weather

Boat trips from Latchi are often associated with the Akamas coast and stops by the water. Please check the specific itinerary: the mention of a well-known bay in the advert does not necessarily mean that the boat will call at it, allow passengers to disembark or go for a swim. The actual route may depend on weather conditions and the decision of the person in charge of the vessel.

Before booking, ask under what circumstances a trip might be cancelled or changed, how you will be notified, and what happens to your payment. A clear refund policy is more important than a verbal promise of good weather. Do not assume that the calm conditions in the harbour apply to the entire stretch of water you plan to sail into, and follow the crew’s instructions.

If swimming is on the programme, find out how entry into and exit from the water are organised, what restrictions apply and what facilities are provided for participants. Do not assume that a particular stop is guaranteed – it may be cancelled if conditions change. Having a backup plan on dry land helps you avoid having to buy an unsuitable service at the last minute.

Price, equipment and return

Compare offers based on what’s included, not just the total price. Check the services, meals, equipment, any potential additional charges and the cancellation policy. For boat hire, make sure you clarify the security deposit, liability for damage and fuel terms; this information must be clear before you confirm your booking.

Check what you need to bring with you: sun protection suitable for the weather, water, clothing, and a way to keep your personal belongings dry. The list depends on the service, so check with the operator. To board, go to the specified jetty, rather than just the general harbour address, so as not to waste time looking for the boat.

Do not book a return transfer or coach without allowing for a buffer after the scheduled return time. The departure time for the sea trip may change or be delayed, and shore transport requires separate arrangements. If there is only one driver in the group, allow time for a rest before the journey and do not combine lunch with drinking alcohol whilst driving.

A plan without a compulsory boat trip

For a first visit, a stroll through the designated areas of the harbour, a visit to a chosen venue and, if you wish, a stop on the waterfront is sufficient. This itinerary does not require you to book a guided tour and is ideal for getting to know the area. You can save Polis and its cultural attractions for a separate part of your trip, having checked the opening times and transport links.

The day before, make a note of the exact addresses, contact details and the weather forecast, and confirm both legs of your journey. If you have booked a service, check the terms and conditions regarding weather-related cancellations and the meeting time. If conditions change, opt for the coastal route; the desire to stick to a pre-arranged plan should not take precedence over assessing the current conditions.

The essence of Latchi lies in its harbour and coastal leisure activities, whilst the sea route is a separate, conscious choice. Clarifying the operator, equipment, itinerary and payment helps you compare offers without promises that cannot be verified from the advertising. A good trip can end on the shore and still provide a comprehensive introduction to the destination.
