Tufan Erhurman discharged after overnight hospital observation

Nicosia, Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman was discharged from hospital on Saturday morning after remaining under observation overnight following illness at an art exhibition on Friday. His office said his general condition was good and that he would rest in line with his doctors’ recommendations.

Hospital treatment

An ambulance was called to the Quirini bastion mansion in Nicosia’s old town, where the exhibition was being held, at around 9pm on Friday. Erhurman was taken to Dr Burhan Nalbantoglu hospital in northern Nicosia.

Late on Friday, Turkish Cypriot ‘health minister’ Hakan Dincyurek said Erhurman had experienced a drop in blood pressure and was taken to the hospital’s cardiology department.

Messages of support

Erhurman’s wife, Nilden Bektas Erhurman, said early on Saturday that “both Tufan and that beautiful heart of his are well” and thanked those who had sent well-wishes.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, who had met Erhurman in Nicosia hours earlier, said he was “deeply saddened to learn” of his illness. He wished Erhurman a speedy recovery and said he hoped he would regain his health as soon as possible.

Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel wished Erhurman a speedy recovery and a quick return to his duties. His ‘deputy prime minister’ Fikri Ataoglu and ‘parliament speaker’ Ziya Ozturkler also sent recovery wishes.

Hospital visits

Erhurman was visited in hospital by senior officials, including Ustel, Ozturkler and Turkish ambassador in Nicosia Ali Murat Basceri, as well as numerous members of the CTP.

Erhurman led the CTP between 2016 and his election in October last year.
