Washington, United States. The United States said it completed an eighth consecutive night of attacks against Iran after reporting that two U.S. military personnel were killed in Jordan and another was missing following an Iranian attack.
The U.S. and Iran have intensified attacks since an interim ceasefire agreement signed a month ago collapsed last week, raising the possibility of a return to all-out war.
U.S. strikes
U.S. Central Command said the airstrikes began at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday at the direction of President Donald Trump.
It said the strikes were intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that launched attacks against U.S. service members in Jordan.
Central Command later said it had completed the wave of attacks, targeting Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities.
Iranian reports and response
Iran’s Mehr news agency reported that the United States carried out an attack near Sirik in southern Iran, with no casualties or infrastructure damage reported. Tasnim news agency said the U.S. military also targeted a location near Shadegan, close to the Iraqi border.
Iran’s army then launched a drone attack targeting U.S. military assets and equipment at Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem Air Base, Iranian state television reported early Sunday, citing an army statement.
The two bases were among U.S. assets and allied locations in the Gulf targeted by Iran since last week.
U.S. casualties
Central Command said the two deaths occurred on Friday and that a third U.S. service member was missing in action. The announcement brought the number of U.S. service members killed since the war began to 16, with more than 420 wounded.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a post on X that the deaths “only stiffen our resolve.”
Iran also appeared to target Saudi Arabia, other U.S. Gulf allies and Jordan on Saturday following U.S. attacks on Iranian bridges, power facilities and other infrastructure.
