Engomi, Cyprus. A 22-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after police seized roughly 6.4kg of cannabis in a case involving alleged drug importation and possession with intent to supply.

How the investigation began

Police launched the inquiry together with the customs department after a package containing 2.56kg of cannabis reached Cyprus on October 26. On that same day, a 62-year-old taxi driver was detained after picking up a parcel he thought belonged to a customer. He did not know what it contained.

Searches and seizures

The investigation led officers to the 22-year-old suspect. A search of his vehicle turned up cannabis packages weighing about 100g, and a further 3.836kg was found in a separate search. Police also confiscated €4,330 and five mobile phones.

Court proceedings

The taxi driver was released because of insufficient evidence. The 22-year-old is due to appear before the Nicosia district court on Friday, when police will request a detention order.
