Washington, United States. An ancient Cypriot jug dating to between 600 and 480 BC has been repatriated from the United States, Cyprus’ antiquities department said on Tuesday.

Identification and withdrawal from auction

The department said officers monitoring illegal trafficking of Cypriot antiquities identified the vessel in an online auction. It was withdrawn after consultation with the auction house.

Handover and acknowledgments

The jug was handed over to the Cypriot embassy in Washington DC, the department said. The department expressed gratitude to Kleinfelter’s Auction Inc. and the possessor for the voluntary return, and to the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington for cooperation and coordination of the repatriation process.

What steps do you think should be taken to prevent the illegal trafficking of antiquities?
