Vafeades leaves transport ministry expressing gratitude as Tsolaki takes office

Nicosia, Cyprus. Outgoing Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said on Thursday he was leaving office with “only feelings of gratitude” as he formally handed the ministry to his successor, Evie Tsolaki. He rejected suggestions that criticism over the Takata airbag scandal had left him bitter.

Handover ceremony

Speaking at the transport ministry’s handover ceremony, Vafeades thanked President Nikos Christodoulides for appointing him to what he described as a demanding portfolio. He also thanked ministry staff for their support during his tenure.

Asked whether the Takata airbag affair had left him with bitterness, Vafeades said: “I leave only with feelings of gratitude.”

He said the independent investigative committee had already “recorded where political responsibilities are attributed and where not”, referring to its findings on the handling of defective airbags.

Projects and continuity

Reflecting on his time in office, Vafeades said the ministry’s legacy included the implementation of development projects, such as the Larnaca port and marina. He said he was confident the projects would continue under the new minister.

Tsolaki thanked Vafeades for the welcome she received, saying she had immediately felt part of the ministry’s team.

“The displays of emotion I see in the ministry’s officials today reflects the deep sense trust, mutual respect and appreciation that developed under Alexis Vafeades,” she said.

Road network

Tsolaki described taking office as “a heavy burden”, saying expectations were high while pledging to continue projects already under way.

“We are rolling up our sleeves starting today,” she said.

Asked about major road projects, Tsolaki referred to a recent meeting with Limassol local authorities concerning the proposed northern bypass. She said improving the city’s road network remained essential.
