Restaurants and bars report strong August trade as customers curb spending

Nicosia, Cyprus. Restaurants, cafes and bars across Cyprus are reporting strong business in August, with occupancy averaging about 80 per cent despite cautious spending by Cypriot and foreign customers.

Local customers drive demand

Neofytos Thrasyvoulou, head of the association of entertainment venues, Osika, said occupancy was being supported mainly by local customers across all districts.

He said Cypriots continued to dine out and visit bars despite operating on tighter budgets.

Fanos Leventis, head of the Pasika association, also said Cypriots made up the majority of customers. He said activity had increased sharply in August compared with previous months, as many Cypriots chose seaside venues for their holidays.

Prices and consumer preferences

Thrasyvoulou called on establishments to maintain high service standards and keep prices affordable despite higher costs for raw materials.

Meze is priced at about €25 to €30 per person, while buffets range from €27 to €35 and grilled food from €20 to €30.

Cypriot customers tend to choose meze and grilled meats, while European visitors more often opt for hamburgers, salads and sandwiches.

Staffing and holiday destinations

Thrasyvoulou appealed to the government to ease regulations for hiring non-EU workers in the catering sector.

Alongside seaside venues, many people are spending leisure time in mountain areas, with Kakopetria, Platres and Kalopanayiotis among the leading destinations.
